  • CAJ Awards 2000 Winners Announced

    ST. JOHN'S, NF, May 26, 2001- The Canadian Association of Journalists, Canada's only national professional organization for reporters, editors, producers and photographers, announced the winners of the annual CAJ Awards for Investigative Journalism today at the association's 23rd annual conference: "Great Big Scrum 2" in Newfoundland. These awards are Canada's only recognition for the best in investigative journalism across the country.

    The winner in the OPEN NEWSPAPER /WIRE SERVICE category is:

    The winner in the SMALL NEWSPAPER category (circulation under 25,000) is:
    Gord Gilmour

    The Manitoba Co-operator

    The winners in the MAGAZINE category are:
    Tom Fennell and Sheng Xue
    Smugglers' Slaves
    Maclean's Magazine

    The winner in the OPEN TELEVISION (LESS THAN 5 MINUTES) category is: Denelle Balfour

    The winner in the RADIO category is:

    The winner in the PHOTOJOURNALISM category is:
    Julie Oliver
    The Ottawa Citizen

    The winner in the Canadian Corporate News Newswire/CAJ COMPUTER ASSISTED REPORTING (CAR) category is:
    Robert Cribb
    Dirty Dining
    The Toronto Star

    The winners of the special "overall" category for THE BEST INVESTIGATIVE REPORT OF 2000 are:
    Julian Sher, Theresa Burke, Linden MacIntyre
    His Word Against History
    CBC - the fifth estate

    The winners in each of the categories were presented with prizes of $1,000 and special plaques for their achievements.

    The winner of the CONFLICT ANALYSIS AWARD is:
    David Ridgen
    On the Borders of Gardens
    Independent Film Maker - Toronto

    The winner of the CAJ/CANADA NEWSWIRE STUDENT AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM was also announced at the Awards Banquet. The winner is:
    Michael Friscolanti
    In Search of a Landmark
    Ryerson Polytechnic University

    The Student Award, jointly created three years ago by the CAJ and Canada NewsWire was presented to Michael Friscolanti, who was on-hand to receive his trophy and cheque for $1,000.
