  • CAJ AWARD 1997 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

    April 26, 1998 — (Toronto) The Canadian Association of Journalists, Canada's only national association of journalists, announced the winners of the 12th annual CAJ Awards for Investigative Journalism at last night's at Awards Banquet at the organization's 20th anniversary conference: Convergence '98 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.

    The winner in the OPEN NEWSPAPER category is:

    Martin van der Hamel
    Condo Crisis
    The Richmond Review

    The winner in the MAGAZINE category is:

    David Pugliese
    Nobel Fever
    Saturday Night

    The winner in the OPEN TELEVISION (LESS THAN 5 MINUTES) category is:

    Tom Walters, Ken Rubin, and Andrew Mitrovica
    Big Fed Bonuses
    CTV Television Network

    The winner in the OPEN TELEVISION (GREATER THAN 5 MINUTES) category is:

    Marie Boti
    Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves
    CBC (Witness)

    The winner in the REGIONAL TELEVISION category is:

    Gerry Wagschal and Jed Kahane
    Driving Drunk
    CBC - Montreal

    The winner in the RADIO category is:

    Robert Carty

    The winner in the PHOTOJOURNALISM category is:

    Robert Semeniuk

    The winner in the SMALL NEWSPAPER category and the winner of the special overall category for THE BEST INVESTIGATIVE REPORT OF 1997 is:

    Will Gibson
    Rich Man, Poor Man
    The St. Albert & Sturgeon Gazette

    The winners in each of the categories were presented with prizes of $1,000 and special plaques for their achievements.

    The winner of the CAJ/CANADA NEWSWIRE STUDENT AWARD OF JOURNALISTS EXCELLENCE was also announced at the Awards Banquet. The winner is:

    Murray Oliver
    Down and Dirty
    CBC-TV/University of Regina

    The Student Award, jointly created two years ago by the CAJ and Canada NewsWire was presented to Mr. Oliver, who was on-hand to receive his trophy and cheque for $1,000.
