    April 17, 1999 -- (Vancouver) The Canadian Association of Journalists, Canada’s only national association of journalists, announced the winners of the 13th annual CAJ Awards for Investigative Journalism at this evening’s Awards Banquet at the organization’s 21st annual conference: "Deadline ‘99" at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. The winner in the OPEN NEWSPAPER/WIRE SERVICE category is:

    The winner in the SMALL NEWSPAPER category (circulation under 25,000) is:

    The winners in each of the categories were presented with prizes of $1,000 and special plaques for their achievements.

    The winner of the CAJ/CANADA NEWSWIRE STUDENT AWARD OF JOURNALISTS EXCELLENCE was also announced at the Awards Banquet. The winner is:

    The Student Award, jointly created three years ago by the CAJ and Canada NewsWire was presented to Mr. Nuttall-Smith, who was on-hand to receive his trophy and cheque for $1,000.
