    CAJ AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED; NATIONAL POST TAKES TOP PRIZE

    April 8, 2000 - (Halifax) The Canadian Association of Journalists, Canada’s only national professional organization for reporters, editors, producers and photographers, announced the winners of the annual CAJ Awards for Investigative Journalism today at the association’s 22nd annual conference: "Halifax Ahoy! " in Nova Scotia.

    These awards are Canada’s only recognition for the best in investigative journalism across the country.

    The winner in the OPEN NEWSPAPER /WIRE SERVICE category is:

    Into the Rough
    National Post

    The winner in the SMALL NEWSPAPER category (circulation under 25,000) is:

    Alex Roslin
    In Dams We Trust
    The Nation, (Montreal)

    The winner in the MAGAZINE category is:

    Tom Fennell and Chris Wood

    Maclean’s Magazine

    The winner in the OPEN TELEVISION (LESS THAN 5 MINUTES) category is:

    The winner of the special "overall" category for THE BEST INVESTIGATIVE REPORT OF 1999 is:

    The winners in each of the categories were presented with prizes of $1,000 and special plaques for their achievements.

    The winner of the CONFLICT ANALYSIS AWARD is:

    Lisa Hebert

    CBC Radio - Ottawa

    The winner of the CAJ/CANADA NEWSWIRE STUDENT AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM was also announced at the Awards Banquet. The winner is:

    Kathy Cook, Carleton University
    The Man Whose Brain Stumps Science,Conquering the Unknown in
    The Ottawa Citizen

    The Student Award, jointly created three years ago by the CAJ and Canada NewsWire was presented to Ms. Cook, who was on-hand to receive her trophy and cheque for $1,000.
