Bill C-426, introduced by Mr. Ménard, passed second reading in the House of Commons, Nov. 28. If it passes third reading, it will become the first law in Canada to protect journalists' sources.

The Montreal chapter of the Canadian Association of Journalists will host a discussion with Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente, Wednesday, November 24, about how merely discussing certain subjects has become taboo in Canada.

Twelve years of Wente's witty and insightful Globe and Mail columns have been compiled into a book An Accidental Canadian, which was just released by Harper Collins Canada.

"Margaret Wente's observations are particularly topical in Montreal," observed CAJ Montreal president Diodora Bucur, "where not just what you can say but who is permitted to speak here, has become the object of intense controversy."
