    Your Voice

In times when access to information is restricted, when diversity of media ownership is challenged, when budget cuts affect news integrity, Canadian journalists need a strong, independent, national voice. That voice is the Canadian Association of Journalists.

    Your Organization

The CAJ is Canada's only national association for journalists. We represent some 1,300 print, radio, television and photojournalists, as well as journalism school students, across Canada, from freelancers to those working at small and large media outlets. The CAJ is a non-profit organization that works for you and with you to create and maintain an exciting and dynamic media profession in Canada. We do this through:
    • Professional Development
    • Advocacy
    • Networking
    • Sourcing Information

    Your Advocate

The CAJ is your national voice on major issues facing Canada's media profession. Things like concentration of ownership, newsroom budget cuts, freelancers fighting to protect their intellectual property, increasing restrictions on access to government information and protecting journalists from naming confidential sources. The CAJ offers a forum for discussing issues and a vehicle for effective action with politicians and the public.

    Your Professional Development Source

Through training workshops, seminars, conferences and special caucuses, from new technologies to investigative reporting techniques, and from research on the Internet to writing winning stories, the CAJ helps you achieve personal excellence in your profession.

The CAJ also provides you with professional recognition through awards for outstanding Canadian journalism. These awards include:
    • $11,000 in investigative awards for print, radio, television, magazine writing and photojournalism
    • The $1,000 Award for Journalistic Excellence in Conflict Analysis
    • The $1,000 CAJ/Canada NewsWire Student Journalism Award

    Your Information Source

When you're looking for that lead, that key source, turn to the CAJ for help. Access us on the Internet and link up with the best journalism sources from across the country and around the world. Chat electronically with other journalists and media professional on issues, jobs and ethics on our electronic list server. It's also a place to post local and national events, pose questions or get help with a story.

As a CAJ member you'll receive a copy of The Directory of Canadian Journalists, compiled with the Matthews Media Directories division of Canadian Corporate News; Sources media reference guide; our annual CAJ/Sources Calender; a twice-yearly newsletter as well as regular updates on national and local CAJ events.

You'll also receive Media magazine three times a year. Media is a national publication offering a selection of thought-provoking stories of importance to all journalists.

CAJ job postings lists vacancies of interest to journalists.

A Press Card and Insurance Benefits are two important services now offered to CAJ members.
